Pump Stations 4 & 6 Rehabilitation
Project Highlights
- PS4 – 2 MGD Capacity
- PS6 – 3 MGD Capacity
- Replaced 4 Pumps
North Weld County Water District (NWCWD) relies on several pump stations within their potable and non-potable water distribution systems.
Pump Stations 4 (PS4) and 6 (PS6) are two of these critical facilities. Both PS4 and PS6 have experienced maximum daily demand (MDD) increases that have risen beyond the level of redundant pumping capacity that exists at each site. This has resulted in more pumps running on a more frequent basis than is typically recommended.
The scope of the improvements at each site included the removal and replacement of the existing pumps, as well as associated piping, valves, flow metering, electrical service and appurtenances, and other materials and equipment. Providence facilitated the civil, mechanical, electrical and controls designs, project bidding, and construction services for the replacement of both pump stations. Work at the stations involved the replacement of two 125-hp horizontal split case pumps and two 100-hp horizontal split case pumps; as well as upgrading a new backup engine-generator, variable frequency drives, flowmeters, piping/valving, and instrumentation equipment.
Extensive modeling was used to determine the optimal pump performance while remaining within the Owner’s standards for head loss in the existing suction- and discharge-side piping. Neither pump station has redundancy, so full-capacity bypass pumping units were temporarily installed at each pump station while the aged equipment was replaced with the new equipment. The project required a very cohesive project team that included the Owner, PIC, the Contractor, and the Contractor’s subcontractors to ensure service was maintained.
